About
Co-founder, CTO and Chairman of Nearby Computing. Previously a researcher and group leader in data centre computing.
Bio
David Carrera is co-founder, CTO and Chairman of Nearby Computing, where he is the chief architect of NearbyOne and leads product strategy and technical direction. He co-founded the company in 2018 as a spin-off of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC).
At BSC he headed the Data-Centric Computing research group, working on the performance management of data centre workloads: task placement and scheduling, software-defined infrastructure, big data and stream processing, and learning-based resource management. He is an associate professor in the Computer Architecture Department of UPC BarcelonaTech, currently on extended leave.
His research has produced more than 100 peer-reviewed papers, an ERC Starting Grant and an ERC Proof of Concept grant, an ICREA Academia award, and the Spanish Royal Academy of Engineering’s Agustín de Betancourt medal for young researchers. He has led industrial collaborations with IBM, Microsoft, Intel and Cisco, and was a Visiting Research Scholar at IBM T.J. Watson.
Nearby Computing
AI is now at the core of the enterprise, and it has to be governed wherever it runs. At Nearby Computing we build NearbyOne to deploy AI anywhere and govern it end to end: across the networks that connect it, the edge devices it runs on, and the clouds and workloads around it, whatever the vendor. Sovereign AI by design.
One governance layer spans every part of the stack that AI depends on, with multi-tenancy, cost management and data traceability built in. Underneath is the orchestration NearbyOne was built on: the provisioning, monitoring and lifecycle of network and application services across 5G, edge and multicloud, from mobile private networks to distributed Kubernetes clusters, for telecom operators, system integrators and large enterprises.
As CTO I define the platform’s technical direction, lead product design, and keep it aligned with industry standards and with what operators and enterprises need.
